First response to emotional distress

A growing movement among family doctors is shifting the focus of care from medication-based treatments to self-regulation techniques—what some are calling “pills to skills.” Rather than merely prescribing drugs to manage sleeplessness, irritability, or digestive issues, these physicians are asking if we can help them equip patients with practical tools to address the roots of stress and trauma. I have been approached to set up resilience clinics for local doctors and teach self-regulation to patients to foster adaptive coping and resilience

Influential research by Dr. Stephen Porges, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, and Dr. Peter Levine all point to the same conclusion: emotional well-being and physical health are deeply intertwined. Dr. Porges’s Polyvagal Theory highlights how our nervous system constantly evaluates our surroundings for signs of safety or threat. Dr. van der Kolk’s work shows how unprocessed trauma lodges in the body, influencing everything from mood to muscle tension. Meanwhile, Dr. Levine’s Somatic Experiencing demonstrates that by attuning to bodily sensations—like posture, tension, or heart rate—we can restore emotional equilibrium and tap into the body’s innate capacity for recovery.

Family doctors note that up to 80% of primary care visits may be driven by stress or trauma-related concerns. By introducing grounding exercises, body awareness practices, and simple movement-based techniques, these physicians empower patients to regulate their own nervous systems. Rather than diagnosing every stress symptom as an illness, they encourage patients to reconnect with their body’s natural wisdom—a shift that not only alleviates discomfort but also fosters genuine, long-term resilience.

By moving from pills to skills, we embrace a mind-body approach that acknowledges our inherent ability to heal and thrive—helping both patients and practitioners find a path to deeper, lasting well-being.
